About this service

Precisely what we do, step by step.

Three species account for 95% of Metro Vancouver pest-bird work: rock pigeons (Columba livia), European starlings (Sturnus vulgaris), and house sparrows (Passer domesticus). All three are non-native, all three are federally legal to exclude — but native species (swallows, swifts, woodpeckers) are protected and require different handling under the federal Migratory Birds Convention Act.

Our bird process starts with species ID (critical — misidentifying a native nest as pest-species is a federal offence). We then choose the right exclusion for the situation: stainless-steel ledge netting for large facades; bird spikes for beams, parapets, and AC units; one-way funnels for soffit and vent roosts; and sonic deterrents in narrow use cases. We never use poisons, adhesives that trap birds, or lethal traps.

For nests already present, we wait for fledglings to leave (typically 2–4 weeks depending on species), then clean and decontaminate the nest site — bird droppings carry histoplasmosis and cryptococcosis risk — and install exclusion. Full exclusion is permanent and warranted.

How to tell

Signs it’s time to call.

  • Droppings accumulating below ledges, windowsills, or roof overhangs.
  • Birds entering soffits, dryer vents, or chimney caps.
  • Cooing, chirping, or flapping sounds from walls or attic.
  • Feathers, nesting material, or broken eggshells around the exterior.
  • Damage to HVAC intakes, solar panels, or rooftop equipment from nesting.
Common questions

Everything else you might be wondering.

Are pigeons protected?

+
Rock pigeons, European starlings, and house sparrows are not protected under the federal Migratory Birds Convention Act — they're all non-native species. Native birds (swallows, swifts, woodpeckers, hawks) ARE protected and require different handling. We always confirm species before starting work.

What about bird droppings?

+
Dried bird droppings can carry histoplasmosis, cryptococcosis, and psittacosis pathogens. We clean droppings with HEPA vacuums and enzyme treatment, with full PPE. If you have active roosting on solar panels, HVAC intakes, or any surface near ventilation, decontamination is non-negotiable.

How long does netting last?

+
Our stainless-steel ledge netting carries a 10-year structural warranty. The netting itself is UV-stable and corrosion-resistant. Installed correctly, most clients see no degradation at 15+ years. Spikes and mesh carry 5-year warranties.

Can you do commercial buildings?

+
Yes. Commercial bird exclusion (office towers, warehouses, food-processing, parkades, heritage buildings) is a core specialty. We work off articulating lifts and rope-access for tall facades. Pricing starts at $1,500 for small commercial jobs; full-facade projects are quoted by linear footage.
